Miss Minnie Rudeen

Minnie Rudeen was born on a farm in the Bethlehem Community of Lancaster County, Nebraska. She went to be with her Lord on Friday evening, July 22, 1955, at the Midwest Covenant Home at Stromsburg, Nebraska. She was 72 years, 3 months, and 24 days.

She lived at the place of her birth and took her schooling in the community until she was 12 years old. The family then moved into the Ceresco Community, where she grew to womanhood. She was confirmed by Pastor Mostrom in 1901 in the Fridhem Mission Church. In 1915 she became a member of the Ceresco Covenant Church where she retained her membership until her death. For many years she worked in the hotel in Ceresco. Later she moved to Mead where she was employed for several years and then back to Wayoo where she worked and made her home until she came to the Midwest Covenant Home about 15 months ago.

Minnie Rudeen was a quiet unassuming person. She was of a cheerful happy disposition and had a fine sense of humor. She was faithful in her attendance at the worship services at the Home and enjoyed the Christian fellowship. About a month ago she was takes suddenly sick and had to be taken to the hospital for an emergency operation. When she was sufficiently recovered from this ordeal, she was returned to the Home again. She was getting along nicely and well on the road to recovery when she suffered a stroke which paralized her right side.

She was preceeded in death by both her parents and one brother, Harry. She is survived by two brothers, Walter of Stromsburg, and Lawrence of Ceresco, and one sister, Edith, Mrs. Ed Johnson also of Ceresco. There are also several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Peace over her memory.

Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon in the Covenant Church in Ceresco, Rev. R.E. Hammer officiating. Soloist was Mrs. Carl Sundberg with Mrs. Carl Mostrom at the organ. Pallbearers were Emerson Ransom, Delwin Rudeen, Stanley Rudeen, Warren Rudeen, Arvin Sundberg, and Carl Sundberg. Burial was made in the Fridhem Cemetery at Swedeburg.

22 Mar 1923 Jermain Whitehouse obituary
Jermain Erving Whitehouse was born in Oswego, N.Y. July 7, 1843. He came with his parents to Houston county, Minn, in 1856. Feb 1 1864 he enlisted in the 1st Minnesota Battery Light Artillery Volunteers and saw service under General Grant at Vicksburg, and was with Sherman on this March to the Sea. He received an Honorable Discharge June 30, 1865. He answered to the call of the Great Commander at 15 minutes of 4:00 o'clock Sunday p.m., March 11, 1923, dying by a stroke in his home in Houston. Had he lived till July 7 he would have been 80 years of age.

Previous to his enlistment, Mr. Whitehouse was married to Louise Appleby. After the war he settled in Money Creek and in 1869 was married to Dora Wilson, who died Dec. 15, 184. Mr Whitehouse was again married Sept. 24, 1885 to Mrs. Ella Whitney, who survives him. His children are as follows: Frank Erving Whitehouse, Norfolk, Neb., Mrs. Delo Viers and Fred Erving Whitehouse, Rushford, Minn., Mrs. Harry Smith of Houston and Vernon S. Whitehouse, Rodman, Iowa. He also leaves 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren and one brother, Charles Whitehouse of Houston. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 1 p.m. from the Presbyterian church, Rev. McKinney officiating. Prof. Wled had charge of the music. The burial was in Money Creek and services at the grave were conducted by the G.A.R. and the American Legion, who attend in a body and whose impressive ceremony was a fitting tribute to the worth and services of an honored veteran. The American Legion also furnished the pall-bearers.

The sympathy of our community goes out to the stricken family their sudden bereavement.

HARRIET DILL BASS
Mrs. Zeno Bass age 85, a resident of Mills County since 1875, passed away last Friday morning at home of her son Mayo Bass north of Tabor, after a brief illness. Mrs. Bass was a native of Indiana, but came west to Kansas in 1868, and to Mills Coo., Iowa in 1875. She was the mother of seven children, of whom six survive, Mrs. Emily Timmons of Valley, Nebr.; Mrs. Ida Dillehay of Council Bluffs; Mrs. Nannie Hodges of Glenwood; Mayo Bass of Tabor; Zeno Bass Jr. of Strahan; and Louis Bass of Malvern.

For 40 years Mr. and Mrs. Bass made their home on their farm in Rawles Township, but in 1912 retired and made their home in Malvern until the death of Mr. Bass in 1923. Since then the mother has made her home with her children. Besides her sons and daughters she is survived by 26 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church in Malvern Sunday afternoon. Conducted by Rev. Schearmann, assisted by Rev. Rarick. Music was furnished by Mrs. D.O. Cunningham, Mrs. John Beckwith, R.M. Criswell and J.R McClymond. Accompanied by Mrs. Hubert Chambers.

Pallbearers were grandsons Austin Bass, Lyle Hodges, Herman Dillehay, Royal Bass, Mayo Bass and Rex Timmons.
Interment was in the Malvern Cemetery.

TABOR BEACON JULY 8, 1931

The following is the obituary:

Harriet Dill was born in Morgantown, Indiana, Jan. 4, 1846. She was the daughter of Peter and Emily Dill. She spent the early years of her life in Indiana until the time of her marriage to Zeno Bass, Feb. 21, 1866.

Seven children were born to their union; one son, Ora, died at the age of twenty-five years. The others survive her. They are: Mrs. Emily Timmons of Valley, Nebr., Mrs. Ida Dillehay of Council Bluffs, Mrs. Nannie Hodges and Mayo Bass of GlenwoodZeno Bass of Strahan, and Louis Bass of Malvern. She is also survived by twenty-six grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren.

They moved to Kansas shortly after they were married where they resided for several years and then moved to Iowa, locating on a farm in Rawles township, Mills county, in 1875. Here they lived for thirty-nine years, building up one of the fine fafarms of that section and adding to it as time went by. Here they reared their fine family and their hospitable home was known far and near. Mrs. Bass was a good neighbor and many there be who recall her many acts of kindness and neighborly help. She was a firm and devout believer in her God and read the Bible as her daily guide.

In 1912 they retired from the farm and moved to Malvern where they built a fine home in the northwest part of town and here they lived until 1923 when Mr. Bass died. Since then she has made her home much of the time with her children. The past few months she seemed to be in fair health and when in town a short time ago she seemed very cheerful and enjoyed visiting with her friends as they came to see her. She was remarkably preserved for one of her age. Her death came as a distinct shock to all who knew her. She will be missed.

Understanding the Context:
Before we dive into the translation, let's understand what this document was. In 18th-century Sweden, moving between parishes required official documentation. This certificate was likely a necessary document for Jän Eliasson and his family to establish themselves in their new parish, Nässjö. It serves as a record of their previous residence, family members, and their religious and educational standing.
Translation and Explanation:
Here's a translation of the document, with some explanations of the old Swedish terms:
-"Bonden Jan Esaiesson från Olarp, född i Lommaryd Åhr 1753, som med sin hustru Stina Larsdotter född i Flisby Åhr 1761, afflytta till Nässjö": "Farmer Jan Eliasson from Olarp, born in Lommaryd in the year 1753, who with his wife Stina Larsdotter, born in Flisby in the year 1761, has moved to Nässjö."
-"kunna båda läsa i bok, oth utan till Luth: Cath: tämligen wäl": "Both can read fairly well, and are reasonably well-versed in the Lutheran Catechism." (Luth: Cath: is short for Lutheranska Katekesen, the Lutheran Catechism)
-"En del af Svebelu Cning kann Mannen dock blott skyckewit och hustrun något mer": "The man can only write a little, and the wife can write a bit more." (Svebelu Cning likely refers to Swedish writing or spelling)
-"begreppen äro enfaldige": "Their understanding is simple."
-"här hafwa de fördt en oklandrad lefnad": "They have led an unblemished life here."
-"infunnit sig wid förhören och begådt h: Hr Nattward sidst d 2 Februari detta Åhr": "They have presented themselves for questioning and received Holy Communion last on the 2nd of February this year."
-"deras barn som äro följaktige är Sohnen Iaac född i Solberga Åhr 1782": "Their children who are accompanying them are: their son Isaac, born in Solberga in the year 1782."
-"kan läsa wäl bok, utan till Luth Catts och en stor del af Gråbergs för klaring": "He can read well, is familiar with the Lutheran Catechism, and a large part of Gråberg's explanations." (Gråberg was likely a religious text or teacher.)
-"dot: Maya född i Flisby 1786 har börjat läsa": "Their daughter Maya, born in Flisby in 1786, has started to read."
-"Sohn Magnus född i Solberga 1789 och Sohn Johannes född. Flisby 1793": "Their son Magnus, born in Solberga in 1789, and their son Johannes, born in Flisby in 1793."
-"Attesteras af Flisby d: 30 Aprill 1794. Claes NLwvir Prop: S Past:": "Attested in Flisby on the 30th of April 1794. Claes NLwvir, Pastor."
